Why salary alone isn't enough
Compensation
Salary, bonus, retirement match, and the cash value of benefits — added up, not guessed at.
Time
Commute, working hours, and PTO. Unpaid time is still time the job takes from you.
Real value
One effective annual value per job, a 0–100 Worthshift Score, a take / negotiate / pass verdict, and what to ask for.
How it works
- 1
Enter both jobs
Salary, bonus, match, benefits, hours, PTO, commute. Sensible defaults are filled in — change only what's different.
- 2
Set what your time is worth
Optional. Worthshift charges commuting time against each job. Leave it blank to use your pay rate.
- 3
Get the verdict
Effective annual value, a Worthshift Score, take / negotiate / pass, the money on the table, and a ready-to-send counteroffer.
Don't accept the offer until you know what it's really worth.
Worthshift takes about two minutes. Nothing is saved to a server, and you don't need an account.
Compare My Job →Frequently asked questions
How do I compare two job offers?
Look past base salary. Add bonus, employer retirement match, and the cash value of benefits, then subtract what each job costs you — health premiums, commuting, and job-related expenses. Divide that by the hours the job actually takes, including commute time, to get an effective hourly value you can compare directly.
How does Worthshift calculate effective salary?
It starts from base pay and adds the parts of the package with real value — bonus, employer retirement match, benefits and equity, and the value of your PTO days at your daily pay rate. Then it subtracts what the job costs you: health premiums, commuting, work expenses, and the value of the hours you spend commuting. Every result has a 'How is this calculated?' panel with the assumptions.
How are benefits and PTO valued?
The retirement match is the match percentage times salary. Other benefits and equity use the annual cash value you enter (equity is the grant divided by its vesting years). PTO is valued at your daily pay rate multiplied by your PTO days — it's a comparison aid, not extra cash.
Is salary or total compensation more important?
Total compensation. Two jobs with the same salary can differ by thousands of dollars a year once you count a 401(k) match, health premiums, bonus, and commuting costs. Salary is the starting point, not the answer.
Can I save my comparisons or download a report?
Yes. Save a comparison to My Worthshift (stored in your browser only) to line it up against other offers, and print a one-page Worthshift Report from the results screen. No account required.
Do these calculators account for taxes?
No. Version 1 deliberately leaves out federal and state income taxes because they depend on your full financial picture. Every result is a pre-tax comparison and is clearly labeled as an estimate.
Is my data private?
Yes. Your inputs are processed in your browser and saved only to your device's local storage. We don't need your name, email, or an account, and nothing is sent to a server.
Can I share my results?
Yes. The results screen creates a link that encodes your inputs, so anyone who opens it sees the same comparison. There's no database — the numbers live in the URL.

Open calculatorWhy salary alone isn't enough
A job offer is a bundle: pay, an employer retirement match, health coverage, paid time off, a commute, and a set of costs you take on to do the work. Comparing only the salary line means comparing maybe 80% of the picture and guessing at the rest.
This tool puts the whole bundle in one number — an estimated annual value — and then divides it by the time the job really takes so you can see an effective hourly value for each option.
What changes the answer most
- Commute. Five office days with a 45-minute drive is nearly 400 unpaid hours a year — plus fuel, wear, and parking.
- 401(k) match. A jump from 3% to 6% on a $90,000 salary is $2,700 a year in real money you'd otherwise leave behind.
- Health premiums. The difference between a $120 and a $320 monthly premium is $2,400 a year straight off your take-home.
- PTO. More paid days off doesn't show up in salary but changes what each working day is worth.
