What goes into the cost of a commute
Fuel is the obvious cost, but it's often less than half of it. Every mile also wears tires, oil, brakes, and the drivetrain — a per-mile cost that runs roughly $0.06–$0.14 for maintenance plus $0.006–$0.02 for tires, and more as a vehicle ages.
The calculator estimates that upkeep from the vehicle type and model year you pick, so you don't have to look up your own per-mile figures. Add your car payment and monthly parking to see the full monthly cost of getting to work.
Should the car payment count?
Include it if you would drive far less — or not own the car at all — without the commute. If you'd keep the same car regardless, leave the payment out and treat this as the marginal cost of commuting. Either way, the fuel, maintenance, and tire lines are the part the commute directly causes.
Frequently asked questions
How much is commuting costing me?
For most car commuters it's a few thousand dollars a year once fuel and per-mile upkeep are counted — often $300–$700 a month with a car payment included. Enter your round-trip distance, working days, and vehicle above for a personalised figure.
Where do the maintenance and tire numbers come from?
They're estimated from the vehicle type and model year using per-mile baselines (roughly AAA's categories), then increased for older vehicles. They're planning estimates, not a quote for your specific car.
What if I take transit or carpool?
Set fuel price, maintenance-heavy inputs, and the car payment to reflect your share — for a monthly transit pass, put it in the parking field and set the vehicle costs to zero.
How do I use this when comparing job offers?
Take the monthly or annual figure and plug the difference into the Job Offer Comparison Calculator so the commute is part of the value comparison.
