How to compare two job offers
Start by making the two offers describe the same thing. For each job, gather the base salary, a typical annual bonus, the employer retirement match, your monthly health premium, the cash value of any other benefits, your weekly hours, weeks worked per year, PTO days, days in the office, one-way commute time, and the daily cost of commuting.
The calculator adds the pay and benefits, subtracts the costs, and produces one estimated annual value per job. It then divides that value by the hours the job actually takes — including commute time — so you get an effective hourly value you can compare directly.
What does a job really cost?
Every job has a price of admission. The obvious ones are health premiums deducted from your paycheck and the money you spend getting to work. The less obvious ones are job-specific: tools or software you buy, licenses and dues, a work wardrobe, or extra childcare to cover your hours.
These costs come straight off the value of the offer. A $5,000 raise that comes with a $3,000 jump in commuting and premium costs is really a $2,000 raise.
Why salary isn't the same as compensation
Compensation is salary plus everything else of value the employer provides: bonus, retirement match, health coverage, and perks. A 5% employer match on a $90,000 salary is $4,500 a year. A strong health plan can be worth several thousand more. Two offers with identical salaries can differ by $10,000 or more in total compensation once these are counted.
How commute time changes your effective pay
Commuting is unpaid working time. A 40-minute each-way commute, five days a week, 48 weeks a year, is 320 hours — the equivalent of eight 40-hour weeks you never get paid for.
This tool counts those hours in the denominator of your effective hourly value. A shorter commute or fewer office days can raise your real hourly rate more than a modest raise would.
How to compare 401(k) matches
Convert the match to dollars: multiply the match percentage by the salary. A 3% match on $100,000 is $3,000; a 6% match is $6,000. That $3,000 gap is real annual compensation, and it compounds for decades inside the account. Enter each job's match percentage and the calculator does this conversion for you.
How to compare PTO
Look at the day count first: more paid days off is more time that belongs to you. To put a rough dollar figure on the difference, use the PTO Value Calculator, which values a PTO day at your daily pay rate. This tool shows the PTO difference side-by-side without folding a guessed dollar value into the main result.
How to calculate your real hourly rate
Take your total annual value, then divide by your annual working hours plus your annual commute hours. The result is what each hour connected to the job is actually worth. For a single job in more detail, use the Real Hourly Rate Calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compare two job offers?
Put both offers in the same terms: salary, bonus, employer retirement match, health premiums, other benefits, hours, PTO, and commute. Add the value, subtract the costs, and divide by the hours the job takes including the commute. This calculator does that and shows a clear winner with the annual and monthly difference.
Is salary or total compensation more important?
Total compensation. Salary is usually the biggest single number, but bonus, 401(k) match, and health costs routinely swing the comparison by thousands of dollars a year.
How much is a 401(k) match worth?
Multiply the match percentage by your salary. A 5% match on a $95,000 salary is $4,750 per year of employer money, and it grows tax-advantaged until retirement.
How do I factor equity or RSUs into the comparison?
Enter the total value of the grant at offer and the number of years it vests over (usually 4). The calculator divides the grant by the vesting period and adds that amount to each year's value. This treats the grant as a fixed award; it doesn't model annual refreshers or changes in the share price.
Should I take a higher-paying job with a longer commute?
Run the numbers both ways. A longer commute adds unpaid hours and direct costs that can cancel out a raise. This tool shows the effective hourly value of each job with commute time included so you can see whether the raise survives the drive.
How do I calculate my real hourly wage?
Divide your total annual value — salary plus benefits minus job costs — by your working hours plus commute hours for the year. The result is lower than salary divided by 2,080, and it's the number that lets you compare jobs fairly.
Should I include health insurance when comparing jobs?
Yes. The employee share of premiums comes directly out of your paycheck, and the gap between a cheap plan and an expensive one is often $2,000–$4,000 a year.
Does this include income taxes?
No. Version 1 compares pre-tax value because taxes depend on your whole financial situation. Results are labeled as estimates and exclude federal and state income tax.
Is my information saved anywhere?
