How it works

  1. 1

    Enter pay and schedule

Salary, bonus, weekly hours, and weeks per year set your baseline hourly rate.

  2. 2

    Add costs and commute

Commuting cost, work expenses, health premiums, and your one-way commute time.

  3. 3

    Read your real rate

Compare the nominal rate with your real hourly value, with and without commute time.

Nominal rate vs real hourly value

Your nominal hourly rate is salary divided by scheduled hours. Your real hourly value subtracts what the job costs you — health premiums, commuting, tools, licenses — and, in the fullest version, counts the time you spend commuting as part of the hours the job takes.

The gap is often larger than people expect. A long commute and a few thousand dollars of annual work costs can pull a $45 nominal rate down below $38 in real terms.

Why this number is useful

A real hourly value gives you a fair way to compare offers with different hours, commutes, and costs, and a baseline for pricing side work or deciding whether extra unpaid hours are worth it.

Frequently asked questions

How is real hourly rate different from salary ÷ 2,080?

Salary ÷ 2,080 assumes 40 paid hours a week with no costs and no commute. Real hourly value subtracts the money the job costs you and, optionally, adds commute time to the hours, so it's usually noticeably lower.

Should I include my commute time?

Include it as a separate figure. Commuting is unpaid time the job requires, so the 'real hourly value including commute' line is the most honest basis for comparing two jobs.

What counts as a work-related cost?

Anything you pay because of the job: health premiums, parking, fuel or transit fares, professional licenses and dues, required tools or software, and a work wardrobe.

Does this account for taxes?

No. It's a pre-tax figure, clearly labeled as an estimate.
